Thirty years ago Argonne established the Advanced Computing Research Facility to experiment with parallel computers of various architectures and launched research projects on parallel algorithms and programming models. We are taking advantage of the anniversary to assess progress in scientific computing during the last thirty years, discuss lessons learned (and forgotten?), and speculate about future challenges and solutions.
